You’re invited to the 1st Annual Volcano Art Center “Community Cup” fundraiser featuring hand thrown tea cups and bowls by our local potters, as well as samples of fine Hawaiʻi grown teas, demonstrations, exhibits and more.

Proceeds from this event will be used to support ceramics and stained glass programming at VAC. Our team of local potters, including Chiu Leong, Erik Wold, Emily Herb plus special guest artists, have already begun throwing tea drinking vessels that will be included in the price of admission!

Throughout the afternoon there will be demonstrations and talks featuring local tea growers & aficionados including Eva Lee and members of the Urasenke Hilo Association. The Urasenke Hilo Association is the Hilo chapter of the Urasenke School of Tea of Kyoto, Japan. It is dedicated to the transmission and the practice of the traditional Japanese tea ceremony.

Many local artisans have contributed their time, expertise and equipment to get these programs up and running, including potters Chiu Leong, Erik Wold, Lisa Louise Adams and Emily Herb, stained glass artists Claudia McCall and Lois Pollock, and flame-worker Nash Adams-Pruitt. However, these programs still have basic infrastructure needs such as improved plumbing (clay trap for the sinks), wedging tables, correctly adjusted stools for wheel throwing, improved lighting and storage. Response from students has been very positive, and to continue to grow these programs, ongoing fund raising is critical, thus the creation of the Community Cup fundraiser.
