Pakaka Nalu, print L68, by Dietrich Varez. King Kamehameha and Queen Ka’ahumanu were known to be particularly skillful at pakaka nalu, or surfing in canoes. A particularly Hawaiian twist to this sport was to leap from the canoe onto a surfboard to complete the ride.
