Volcano Art Center is proud to announce the exhibition Reflections by Gary Eoff. The exhibit which features prints, cultural reproductions and kapa will open at the Volcano Art Center Gallery in Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park on April 9th and will continue through May 15th, 2022. The gallery is open daily from 9am -5pm, admission is free however National Park entrance fees apply.
Gary Eoff has resided in Kona since 1981 and works as an artist and craftsman influenced by Hawaiian culture and traditions. Inspired by the expert craftsmanship, the high level of aesthetics and the natural materials used in the culture of old Hawai’i, his work is noted for its attention to detail, its authentic designs and use of traditional materials and processes. He grows, gathers and harvests his natural materials in a manner that sustains the forest: always careful to nurture the plants and help them to reproduce more than was taken.
Gary’s love of Hawaiian traditions, especially the voyaging canoes, is reflected in the themes of his prints and artwork. The last exhibit at VAC featuring Gary’s work was the Worldwide Voyage in 2017 which celebrated the Hōkūleʻa and its return to Hawaiʻi after its circumnavigation of the globe. That exhibit focused on provisioning the canoe for blue water voyaging and displayed the close connections between cultural practices and protecting Hawaiʻi’s natural resources.
Gary’s contemporary art forms have been inspired through the use of traditional materials and techniques. This exhibit will feature a plethora of prints varying from original mono prints to affordable giclee reproductions as well as intricate weaving of traditional Hawaiian materials such as hau, ʻieʻie and olonā. He works independently and in collaboration with other master artists on multi-media art pieces.
“The Volcano Art Center is honored to showcase Gary’s work as a solo exhibition” states Gallery Manager Emily C. Weiss. “We consider Gary an expert craftsman in his varied expressions and a modern link to ancient methods and techniques. He has a deep understanding and knowledge which accompany his museum quality reproductions of traditional Hawaiian cultural artifacts, which we learn so much from.”

King Kamehameha Celebration, 150th Anniversary. Call for Entries!
Juried art exhibit celebrating 150 years of Hawaiʻi honoring King Kamehameha, The Great.
On June 11th, 1872, Hawai‘i held its first King Kamehameha Day celebration. The holiday was decreed by royal proclamation in 1871 by King Kamehameha V, grandson of Kamehameha I. The holiday was intended to celebrate the legacy of not only his grandfather but the father of the Hawaiian nation. June 11, 2022, marks the 150th anniversary of this noble holiday.
In honor of this very special day the Volcano Art Center (VAC) is soliciting works of art that celebrate the life and legacy of Hawaiʻi’s great warrior and statesman. Art of any media may be entered that expresses the relevance of the great king including the indigenous language and culture of the Hawaiian Islands today. Works of visual, literary and performing arts will be considered for exhibition at VAC from May 21st – June 26th 2022.

Hawai’i Nei Invitational

Invitational art exhibition featuring artists selected from the 2021 Hawaii New exhibition.
The Volcano Art Center is proud to announce a curated, group exhibition focusing on Species Of Concern (SOC). Participating artists selected from the Hawai`I Nei 2021 Annual Art Contest celebrating Hawai`I Island’s native species. The Volcano Art Center further challenges these creative individuals to create new works of art that explore Species of Concern from the state of Hawaii. Species of concern are species about which there are some concerns regarding status and threats, but insufficient information is available to list the species under the Endangered Species Act. Species on this list include different designations – endangered, critically endangered, vulnerable, etc. VAC hopes the exhibition will bring awareness to these vulnerable species and conservation efforts to preserve them. This mixed media, multiple artists exhibition will be on display at VAC Gallery in Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park from July 2nd – August 7th, 2022.
