Kamehameha And Pele, 1801 Eruption, print L107, by Dietrich Varez. When Hualalai erupted in 1801 the Ka’upulehu vent flowed, engulfing a village and valuable fishing pond. In an attempt to stop the flow, animals and other items were offered to Pele to no avail. Legend has it that Kamehameha I offered Pele a lock of his hair which finally stopped the flow.
