Pau Pele, Pau Manō by Lia Rinearson
“This picture is my depiction of King Kamehameha’s struggle to preserve the beautiful Kiholo Bay from the wrath of Pele and her lava flowing from Hualalai. When all his prayer and offerings failed to appease, finally he tore a piece of his own hair and held it out to the fiery goddess. The flow was diverted and the king of Hawai’i humbled. He vowed to remain faithful in his worship of Pele. Or, as the saying goes, may he be devoured by her fiery lava or swallowed by the mighty Manō.” -Lia Rinearson
