Join Zach Mermel on Saturday, April 2 for this compelling two part series: Secrets of the Soil. Part 1 is from 9am – 1pm and Part 2 is from 2pm – 5pm. Cost for Part 1 is $40/$30 for VAC members. Cost for Part 2 is $30/$25 for VAC Members. Cost for the day (both sessions) is $60/$50 for VAC Members.
We stand on it, play with it, plant things in it, but where does it come from? In Zach Mermel’s Secrets of the Soil, you’ll discover how soil is formed and what (or who) lives in it. You’ll also learn the different types of soils that are found in Hawaii. In the first session, you’ll dive into the dynamics of the soil food web, the various properties of the soil, and the fundamentals of soil testing at the homestead and farm scale.
And that’s just the first part.
The second part of the day will be a hands-on tutorial on making compost so delicious your plants will devour it like dessert. This second session will explore strategies for dramatically enhancing the life-giving properties of the soil. Participants will gain hands-on experience constructing a biologically active compost pile, a home-scale worm bin, and applying compost tea sprays to plants and soil.
