Sunday Clay – High Fire! is an eight week workshop beginning Sunday, December 3, through February 4, 2018, with no class on December 24 & 31. There will be a morning session from 11:30am – 2:30pm or an afternoon session from 2:45pm – 5:45pm. Glazing will take place on February 4, with pick up on February 18 (anytime between 11:30-5:30) or by other arrangement.
Have you experienced the pleasure of putting your own handmade functional pottery into use? All skill levels are welcome to join us at Volcano Art Center’s ceramic studio where we will be working with stoneware clay and high-fire reduction glazes.
Teaching artist, Erik Wold, will provide instruction for this class including demonstrations of wheel throwing methods and be available for individualized assistance. Those new to clay will be guided step by step through the basics of using the potter’s wheel or handbuilding techniques.
Continuing students and those with previous experience are encouraged to develop their skills and are welcome to pursue more advanced directions with the instructor’s helpful input. Informal discussion on topics ranging from sources of creative inspiration to various pottery styles and traditions from around the world will supplement this hands-on learning experience.
Eight registration slots are open to “wheel throwers”, and two additional places will be open to “hand builders”. Beginners as well as continuing students are welcome.
Cost for either session is $200/$185 for VAC Members plus a $15 materials fee for 6 lbs of clay, which includes glazes and firing for that material. Additional clay will be available for purchase.

About Erik Wold
Erik Wold is a full time potter living in Volcano Village. He is a member of the Volcano Village Artists Hui, and sells his wares regularly at the Saturday Hilo Farmers Market, and Sunday Cooper Center Farmers Market in Volcano.
Erik studied Ceramics at the University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo, graduating in 1993.
I saw your add for Sunday Clay-High Fire in the Big Island TV Week. After reading this posting, it sounds like I’m too late for the current class. Would you have a future class scheduled or planned? I am interested in taking your class. I am a senior looking for something fun to do. I took some pottery classes 45 years ago in Long Beach, CA. I remember making 2 piece pots or vases about 36 inches tall. Not sure I could do much now without instruction. I’d probably be able to center clay on the wheel. At least I would like to try.
