“I wanted to create this portrait of Kamehameha in the style of an etching. I chose to depict him when he was younger and a warrior. The setting is at Honaunau which was the ancestral home of the Kamehameha dynasty. The image is framed by images of the Hawaiian god Kū or Kūkaʻilimoku who was the guardian of Kamehameha.” – Nelson
