Kamehameha Kapa by Margo Vitarelli
“I hand carved small blocks and stamps with designs and images that relate to King Kamehameha, his life , his place and his accomplishments. Some of the images I carved are the god Ku, the paddle (Law of the Splintered Paddle), the spear (symbolize power, competition and warfare), the ʻŌhiʻa Lehua (representing the island of Hawaii), the Kalo plant and Uhu fish (representing Hawaiian culture). Around and in the background are Kapa designs made with a traditional Hawaiian printmaking technique similar to the printmaking technique I have used.” – Margo
