Ki’i Kupuna: ‘o Kamehameha–Ka’iwakīloumoku by Carl F. K. Pao

“One of Kamehamehaʻs numerous names given to him over his lifetime was Ka’iwakīloumoku or the Thief of Islands. The name gives reference to the ‘Iwa or frigate bird who is known for stealing the food from other sea birds. The eight ‘Iwa above the forehead of Kamehameha represent the eight southwestern islands that Kamehameha brought under one rule.” – Carl
