By combining Hawaiian Koa with woods from around the world, Big Island artisans Tim and Tiffany Shafto, ASID, create the beautiful contrasts that are the signature of DeEtte and Allen designs.
Hawaiian Koa wood (Acacia Koa) is only found in the Hawaiian Islands and has been prized for centuries for its density and range of colors and figure. In the past, it was reserved for Royalty and made the very best sea faring canoes and paddles. Nearly every piece from DeEtte and Allen designs incorporates the use of this highly valued, beautiful Hawaiian wood.
The Shaftos, a husband and wife team, combine their individual talents . . . he as a master woodworker, she as an ASID designer, to create these distinctive, award-winning works of Koa wood art.
The wood grain and pattern is given careful attention. A high level of sanding and hand buffing ensure that the color and figure of the wood are brought to their fullest potential. The soft luster achieved is dazzling and the way light plays off the Curly Koa and other figured woods is astounding.
The Shaftos often vary the combinations of woods that they use in their designs, creating new looks with the same size and style of vessel.
They were recently honored by receiving the Award of Excellence from the Juror of the Hawaii Craftsmen 39th Statewide Juried Annual Exhibition.
