Born in Trinidad, in the Caribbean, Dominic Tidmarsh was educated in the U.K. then earned a B.F.A. in Photography from the Corcoran School of Art in Washington D.C.
Since first visiting Hawaii in 1986, his muse has been Mauna Kea. From that first moment atop the mountain he felt a deep and enduring connection to the Big Island. In his journal in 1986 he wrote “In my dreams I am on a Mountain, and the Mountain is me. It is my whole life, it is my whole world”.
In 1996 he came to live in Hawai‘i. Since then, Mauna Kea has been joined by a whole “cast of characters” in his work, all emerging from his life experience in this magical place.
Works exploring the geology, volcanology, astronomy and archaeo-astronomy of Hawai‘i, among others, have branched out from the central “axis” that is the mountain.
In recent years his work has taken on a new role: to convey and interpret the characters and encounters emerging from his dreams and meditations, along with those that cross over to visit in the “real world”.
